engines
grinding; gears locking; metal on metal; the ticks
and whirs of the world, normally unheard things,
now act as the backbone for the skeletal machine
that whirs and beats its way beneath the low end
grunt of pain, anguish, heartache and the absolute
disillusionment of the human condition embodied by
a voice that relies only on its ability to emote in
order to be heard above the machines.
a world
covered in rust and decay, slowly being devoured by
mother earth's minions. her children, weeds
blooming in absolute oblivion to the tiny speck of
mankind's civilizations, reclaiming the world as
hers.
this is
the sound of something fighting impossible odds to
survive, something that wasn't supposed to
flourish...
this
is.......
among the weeds
planted
in 2003 by vocalist, rose, among the
weeds started like all grand
things.... small. distracted by taking on the role
of the lead vocalist in many bands, rose finally
decided that her own project was the one she felt
most connected with.
over
time, among the
weeds grew and planted a few
songs out there, amongst them, a little blossom
called 'lament' began to bloom, and the bees began
to buzz...
in late
2006, mike heard 'lament', and was instantly
impressed. the pair were introduced by then
alaska
highway vocalist, anthoni (now
monastic) a short time later to see if there was
any musical chemistry. they clicked instantly, and
began re-structuring 'lament' for a live debut
under mike's project, alaska
highway. the duo could not have
been happier with the reaction.
rose
promptly invited mike to join the project to
produce/engineer and re-mix an existing body of
songs already geared for the project's debut
release, frail tin
beauty, and leave it at that.
however, once the two forces combined, there was no
stopping it. like a weed that will not die. within
a few short months of their meeting, the pair
became closer as a team, and magically began
creating the music they each felt born to do,
straying farther away from the original idea that
mike was just an acting engineer, there to merely
to put his magic on songs that already existed.
mike was a member of among the weeds from then
on.
2007 came
to a close with much chaos in the personal lives of
the duo as they had embraced the realization that
they were much more than just creatively bound.
their living situations were thrown into complete
disarray and much would have to be sacrificed to
overcome the odds against them.
as 2008
started off, among the
weeds were facing near poverty,
after a deal gone wrong with their 'landlord'
(actually a con artist posing for financial gain)
the grim reality of life at its hardest did not
break the duo down. instead, with all the odds
against them like the flower in the field of rush
skeleton weed, among the
weeds thrived, filling their
canvas with new colours and epic soundscapes,
drawing from the experiences that try us all and
push us to our limits.
stronger
than ever, yet still crawling back from the trials
and tribulations of the months past, the duo grow
into a quartet; including guitarist jovan and
bassist brian. two shows in los angeles debuted
many of the songs destined for the album, and
gained a lot more fans to boot...
after a
relocation to portland oregon in late '08, brian
was replaced on bass by cindy who has many years
experience with such bands as 'faith and the muse',
among the
weeds are currently working
towards finishing up the long-anticipated album,
frail tin
beauty, for its upcoming
release.
